WISHES DO COME TRUE SOMETIMES
I woke this morning dealing with the usual questions and doubts that have become regular visitors in my head over the past few months…(Ha! That’s funny, they’ve been there a lifetime.)
As I wrestled with getting out of bed and facing the demons that have become squatters in my head, I thought back to my days as a probation officer when I spent my days helping others walk through their personal battles. Suddenly the thought came across my mind, “I wish I was involved in someone else’s fight today.” Honestly, I’m just tired of dealing with my own “stuff” right now; it tends to feel overwhelming.
Then I got a text message…
“Hey, not doing so hot. Call when you can.“
Funny how wishes sometimes get answered…
It was a message from a young man I have been mentoring. He’s a head coach at a local high school and he had a bad experience the night before during a meeting.
I got my morning coffee and settled down to give him a call to process his experience. We’ll skip the details of the experience here, but what was reinforced for me through the phone call was the thought of how vulnerable we can feel when we step out of our comfort zone and take on larger challenges in our lives, even when we are right where we should be.
DREAMS COME WITH A FIGHT
This young man has dreamt of being a coach, and he’s stepped into this role in his mid-20’s…but it comes with a fight. As a dream-chaser, the opponents can be vicious at times with the most imposing occupying our own mind…like the two-headed monster known as Doubt and Unbelief.
Is there anyone out there who has stepped up to an incredible opportunity in their lives and has not faced this two-headed monster at some point in time? The secret conversations we have in our head, questioning whether we have what it takes to succeed; the battles with the fear of being exposed as a poser, a fraud…powerful and sometimes crippling messages that we must face and overcome if we are to step into the destiny we are to fulfill.
Here’s a thought I believe applies in most circumstances:
The larger the opportunity; the larger the opponent
HOW’S THIS APPLY TO “ME”?
Everything I write is motivated by the idea of taking something and applying it to my own life…and hopefully you as a reader find something to ponder in your life as well. As I’ve shared in recent posts, I’m in my own wilderness right now and some days I do a good job of facing my demons while other days I find a good distraction helps me get through the day just fine (so I think in that moment).
As I talked with this young man, several thoughts came out of my mouth:
- You’re right where you should be…
- You have what it takes to be successful…
- Be humble and learn through every opportunity…
- Refuse to allow doubt to camp out in your mind…
- Always seek wisdom…
- Believe…
I then remembered a feeling I had often while sitting in my probation office after appointments…
“Are you going to apply this to your life as well?”
Herein lies my fight…but that’s for me to address after I hit the “publish” button here.
IN CLOSING
This was short, but for you as the reader, I wish you great opportunities in your future, and I wish you success in your fight with those opponents that sometimes sneak in the door unnoticed with that opportunity.
